ISIS, James Foley and the President’s Tepid Response to the “Religion of Peace”

As ISIS videotaped the brutal beheading of an American journalist, its spokesman, in perfect English, warned President Obama and the American people that more deaths are coming if the US does not submit to their demands. The President’s tepid response this afternoon was disappointing.

Even at this time of sorrow for the barbaric murder of Jim Foley, President Obama could not help but to give credence to the “good cop/bad cop” routine which Muslims have consistently used to blunt our ability to effectively deal with the true threat posed by radical Islam itself. 

But Obama’s approach is not new.  For years Americans have endured the deception spewed out by politicians pandering for Muslim votes, our own government, and Muslim apologists that “Islam is a religion of peace”. . .

             . . . even as fellow Americans were being blown to bits and murdered by Islamic terrorists, from the 9/11 attacks, to the Fort Hood massacre, and the Boston Marathon bombing.

And now, James Foley. 

WWII could have been prevented and millions of lives saved if only our leaders had taken more seriously what Hitler wrote in Mein Kampf and said in his speeches. 

Koran-believing Muslims consider the slaughter of Americans moral and holy.

Let’s not make the same mistake with these jihadists as we did with Hitler.  Take them seriously.

The Koran commands Muslims to engage in a holy war (Jihad) in order to impose Islam and Shariah Law on the entire world.

“Fight and kill the disbelievers wherever you find them, take them captive, harass them, lie in  wait and ambush them using every stratagem of war.” (Koran 9:5)
 
Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi of the Muslim Brotherhood told a youth conference in Toledo, Ohio in 1998,

 “We will conquer Europe, we will conquer America.”  

The horrific 9/11 attacks were sanctioned by the Koran’s mandate to wage Jihad (holy war) against non-Muslims.  How can anyone call Islam a religion of peace!
  • “[D]ismember [the American] nation, tear them apart…destroy their embassies…shoot down their planes…kill them on land, at sea, and in the air.  Kill them wherever you find them.”

With the help of the Obama administration, Islamists have infiltrated the highest echelons of our government and are on the road to achieve their goal to destroy America from within — unless you and I do something about it. 

 

  • Numerous Islamic terrorism experts who used to give hundreds of presentations on Islam’s true threat to America are now banned from speaking at government counter-terrorism classes and conferences.

  • General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, ordered all training material used by military professional colleges and combat units scrubbed of any content offensive to Islam.

  • General Dempsey also caused the firing LTC Matthew Dooley as an  instructor at the National Defense University teaching the course on Perspectives on Islam and Islamic Radicalism because it was offense to Islam.  Up to that point LTC Dooley was a rising star in the military. (The Thomas More Law Center is representing LTC Dooley) 

  • John Brennan (now Director of the CIA), during a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, argued that the terms “jihadist” or “jihad” should not be used to describe America’s enemies.  His reason: Jihad is a holy struggle and a legitimate tenet of Islam. 

  • Caving-in to Muslim demands, the FBI purged 876 pages and 392 presentations that were deemed offensive to Islam.

  • When Muslim U.S. Army Major Nidal Hasan, shouting “Allahu Akbar,” killed 13 fellow soldiers and wounded 30 in the Fort Hood massacre, the government called it workplace violence.  The 86-page official report on this massacre didn’t once mention Muslim or Jihad.  But it mentioned workplace violence 16 times.

  • An Obama-appointed U.S. Attorney in Tennessee threatened to prosecute anyone who made inflammatory statements about Islam.

So how can we defeat our enemies if our leaders refuse to allow patriotic Americans  to accurately identify them!

Islam is more than a religion.  It is a political ideology that calls for Islamic domination of the world.  Moreover, it’s incumbent on Muslims to make war upon non-Muslims until all nations submit.

And that includes the United States.            
 

This is what the co-founder of CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations) said to a California audience in 1998: 

 

 “Islam isn’t in America to be equal to any other faith, but to become dominant. The Koran should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on Earth.”

 

To be forewarned is to be forearmed.

Thank you for your Service — You’re Fired; Pink Slipping our Army Captains a Threat to National Security

While we watched the commander-in-chief drinking beer and playing pool last week, we learned that 1,100 Army captains — some in harm’s way on the front lines in Afghanistan—were receiving pink slips notifying them they were fired.   How demoralizing, heartless, and stupid.

These captains now must lead and care for the Soldiers entrusted to them in combat, dodge the bullets and IEDs, and at the same time worry about finding a job when they get back home, that is, if they ever do.    As one Army wife posted on MilitaryFamily.org, “On some level I knew the draw downs were inevitable, but I guess I never expected to be simultaneously worried about a deployment to Afghanistan and a pink slip because my husband’s service is no longer needed.”

This is another stark example of domestic politics trumping our national security interest. 

The experience and knowledge about the enemy and counter insurgency these officers have gained is irreplaceable.    

The very Army leadership we are eliminating are the leaders we most desperately need to retain.   Why?  Because they represent three critical talent streams that will be essential in our next war (and there WILL be a next war, and it will likely be sooner than anyone wants):

  1. Courage – They are among the bravest volunteers.  Any captain or major currently with 6 to 10 years in service would have had to have raised his/her hand around 2004-2008, when the current war was at its worst.  Iraq was in sectarian flames, and a resurgent Taliban was attempting to retake Afghanistan.  This was followed by the surge to fix Iraq and Operation Medusa in Afghanistan to save Kandahar from the Taliban.  All of this and these young Soldiers still said, “I’ll go.  Send me.” 
  2. Experience – This war has been largely a platoon leader and company commander’s fight.  These Soldiers have been the point of the spear for years and are at the pinnacle of their professional relevance in our ongoing global war against Al-Qaeda.  We are now going to dump a major chunk of irreplaceable talent out on the streets.
  3. Talent – These are now some of our most agile and adaptive leaders.    These young leaders have mastered the art of coordinating nearly all elements of national power to achieve our nation’s global aims – not just military force, but diplomacy, economic resources, education, and information in an effort to defeat an intractable enemy and provide space for innocent civilians to carve out a new country.

Given the recent events of China threatening its Pacific neighbors, an emboldened and bellicose Russia threatening Ukraine and inserting itself in Latin America, Iran ever closer to nuclear weaponry and a Middle East now descending into a virtual free-fall of Islamist inspired chaos why would anyone inside the White House be stupid enough to press ahead with these drastic levels of military cuts?    It is tantamount to willful negligence on the part of our nation’s political leadership.

Our Army is currently at 510,000, well below the Clinton Era Army.  The current cuts are aimed at reducing it to 490,000.  And the most recent defense budget proposal from the Pentagon, now working its way through Congress, calls for an Army of 450,000 soldiers.

It seems our troop reduction policies are based on how we would like the world to be, not what it really is.  We have forgotten George Washington’s admonition, “To be prepared for war is one of the most effective means of preserving the peace.”

Moreover, we are reducing our military ranks without regard to our own dismal history in accurately predicting both the timing and nature of our next war.  In February 2011, then Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, told an audience of West Point cadets:

 

Major force reduction is a bridge the U.S.  Army has crossed often, especially during the big post-war draw downs.    The post World War I and World War II era draw downs were very large, but these were entirely expected and economically necessary.      

Although the Pentagon is attempting to soften current separations, the fact remains: it is putting out young officers into a weak economy which still hasn’t recovered from the 2008-2009 recession.  These young officers and their families agreed to devote their lives to defending our country.  Now they are rightfully concerned about finding a job (the unemployment rate for recent veterans is incredibly high).  We thank them for their service.  But Washington will spit them out in another 10 months.

President John F.  Kennedy, on November 26, 1962, addressed the First Armored Division, at Fort Stewart, Georgia.   The Division had been deployed during the Cuban Missile crisis.   In his remarks he quoted from a poem found in a sentry box in Gibraltar:

Remembering D-Day – Video

Today – June 6, 2014 – is the 70th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy.

On that day soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen braved the horrendous shelling of German shore batteries to storm the beaches at Normandy and bring down Hitler and Nazi Germany.

On the eve of the invasion, General Eisenhower distributed the order to the expeditionary force of 175,000 men which closed by beseeching “the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.” (Complete 1:45 audio below)

More than 2,500 American troops died on the beaches that day.

Also, in the words of  Franklin D. Roosevelt broadcast that day (Complete 6:30 audio below), “in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer:

Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity.

Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith.

They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph.

They will be sore tried, by night and by day, without rest-until the victory is won. The darkness will be rent by noise and flame. Men’s souls will be shaken with the violences of war.
                        

For these men are lately drawn from the ways of peace. They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate. They fight to let justice arise, and tolerance and good will among all Thy people. They yearn but for the end of battle, for their return to the haven of home.

And, O Lord, give us Faith. Give us Faith in Thee; Faith in our sons; Faith in each other; Faith in our united crusade. Let not the keenness of our spirit ever be dulled. Let not the impacts of temporary events, of temporal matters of but fleeting moment let not these deter us in our unconquerable purpose.
With Thy blessing, we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy. Help us to conquer the apostles of greed and racial arrogancies. Lead us to the saving of our country, and with our sister Nations into a world unity that will spell a sure peace a peace invulnerable to the schemings of unworthy men. And a peace that will let all of men live in freedom, reaping the just rewards of their honest toil.

Thy will be done, Almighty God.

U.K.; U.S. Bowing to Islam — What Would Winston Churchill Do?

In May, the British Press reported that fast food giant Subway has removed ham and bacon from 200 outlets, and switched to preparing meat according to halal (Muslim) rules, to please its Muslim customers.  This means that after the butcher shouts “Allah Akbar,” he slaughters the animal by slitting its throat and windpipe causing it to bleed to death. How would Winston Churchill have reacted to the news?

Winston Churchill referring to Islam, in 1899, wrote, “No stronger retrograde force exists in the world.”  And at the 1921 Cairo Conference, commented:  “They hold it as an article of duty, as well as of faith, to kill all who do not share their opinions and to make slaves of their wives and children … Austere, intolerant, well armed, and bloodthirsty.” The Ottoman Empire aligned itself with Germany in WWI and declared jihad against France and Great Britain.   Just a few decades later, Muslims of the Middle East again aligned with Germany against the West.  The Grand Mufti of Arab Palestine al-Husseini served as a Nazi propagandist, encouraging Muslims in Europe to lead armed revolts and attacks on Allied interests.

Churchill took the lead in warning about Nazi Germany. His steadfast refusal to surrender inspired the British resistance to Hitler during the difficult early days of the War when Britain stood alone.  For his wisdom and courage as a defender of freedom, Churchill was the first person to be made an honorary citizen of the United States.

Fortunately, in WWI and WWII our military might defeated German and Muslim alliances.

However—TODAY— dominance over the West is once again the focus of Radical Islam. The tactics are subtler than all-out military conflict, and appear to be more successful.  It is a stealth jihad waged within our borders that takes advantage of the dominance of political correctness in a sea of indifference to the dangers radical Islam poses:

  • Last month, a UK politician was arrested for and charged with a racially aggravated crime after quoting Churchill’s criticism of Islam in a speech;
  • Britain’s the Law Society released guidelines for drafting Sharia compliant legal contracts.
  • In 2011, a report documented the rise of Europe’s “no-go” zones, many of which “function as microstates governed by Islamic Sharia law.” Included in the report were the 751 sensitive urban zones across France where the French government has completely lost control. “No-go” zones are also present in Germany, Norway, Sweden, Italy, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

But, bowing to Islam isn’t just confined to Europe. It’s occurring here in the US as well.For instance, through the continuous capitulation to the demands of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and other pro- Islamic groups, any criticism of Islam is deemed offensive and banned:

  • The University of Michigan cancelled a screening of a documentary entitled “Honor Diaries”(video) which details the truth about the brutal violence against women perpetrated in the name of Islam.
  • Brandies University withdrew an honorary degree from Ayaan Hirsi Ali (video) because her work to protect and defend the rights of women and girls includes truthful criticism of Islamic law’s justification for rape and beatings.
  • A Colorado high school led students in the recitation of the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic, saying, “one nation under Allah.” (Allah is not the same as the Judeo-Christian God.)
  • Numerous Islamic terrorism experts are now banned from speaking at government counter-terrorism classes and conferences.
  • The FBI has purged 876 pages and 329 presentations that were deemed offensive to Islam, and the Pentagon ordered all training material used by military professional colleges and combat units scrubbed of any content offensive to Islam.
  • And the list goes on…

In 1998, at an Ohio youth conference, Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi said, “We will conquer Europe, we will conquer America.”  As al-Qaradawi’s conquest continues to creep across Europe and into the US, we must ask ourselves, what would Churchill do?

How would Churchill react to American Universities forfeiting their identities as centers of free speech and open discussion to the pressures of organizations like CAIR?

What would he say abut government agencies unable to identify the enemy because of political correctness?

Would Churchill have allowed his country to ignore the evidence of the murderous ideology of Radical Islam because of political correctness or because some Islamists asked him to?

What would Churchill do?

10 Ways True Feminism is Under Attack

Feminism is a top down social movement controlled by the political class which is exploited to promote cultural marxism, confuse gender roles, denigrate men and mislead women – all while completely ignoring genuine women’s rights issues. Here are ten ways in which true feminism is under attack.

1) Feminism Was Hijacked by the Political Class to Exploit Women

When the average person thinks of feminism, they don’t differentiate between first wave feminism and second wave feminism. First wave feminism was primarily centered around giving women the right to vote and the right to own property. No one would argue with first wave feminism being a noble cause. However, second wave feminism was quickly hijacked the the elite as a tool for social engineering and has little to do with women’s rights. A quote often attributed to Adolf Hitler is, “First you get the women, then you’ve got the children, so follow the men.” By hijacking feminism and making it about subjugating men, the establishment succeeded to a great extent in making women more dependent on the state.

As the late Aaron Russo revealed, the women’s liberation movement was also hijacked by the elite as a method of revenue generation. Russo was told directly by Nick Rockefeller that the Rockefellers bankrolled feminism not because they had any interest in women’s rights but because it meant that by getting more women in employment quicker, the state could collect more tax dollars. Rockefeller also told Russo that this served the dual purpose of getting children in school at an earlier age, enabling them to be indoctrinated into accepting the state as the guardian, breaking up the traditional family model.

2) The CIA Played a Key Role in Hijacking Feminism

The Central Intelligence Agency played a key role in hijacking second wave feminism via the work of Gloria Steinem, who is still a noted feminist icon today. Steinem admitted that she was recruited by the CIA to infiltrate youth counter-culture movements in the late 1950′s, and subsequently emerged as a leading icon of second wave feminism in the 1960′s. Steinem subsequently received funding from the CIA and the Rockefeller foundation to set up Ms. Magazine, a feminist publication.

The CIA’s role in steering and managing second wave feminism again underscores the fact that feminism is not a grass roots “people” movement, it is a top down system of control used to divide and conquer and is run by powerful individuals who care little for actual women’s rights.

3) Cultural Marxism: Divide and Conquer

Second wave feminism serves to advance cultural marxism, which posits that culture and language, not the state, is responsible for oppressing women. This is why the establishment constantly promotes second wave feminism, because by blaming contrived women’s rights issues on language, culture and patriarchy, the state absolves itself of blame. By characterizing complete non-issues, such as the recent “ban bossy” campaign, as critical feminist causes, the state distracts from real women’s rights abuses, such as those committed by the governments of US allies around the world.

Cultural marxism also impugns patriarchy and the middle class as being the source of oppression, thereby enflaming class and gender wars and allowing the state to engage in divide and conquer. While people of different races and genders are trained to pick fights with each other, they are prevented from uniting against their common enemy and the only entity that can truly inflict genuine oppression – the state.

4) Mainstream Feminism Ignores Real Women’s Rights Issues

Mainstream feminism serves to deflect attention away from countries where genuine women’s rights abuses and atrocities against women are taking place, by advancing meaningless causes that have nothing to do with women’s rights and everything to do with social engineering. A recent example is the “ban bossy” campaign, which is being funded by some of the largest western banks, oil companies and PR firms on the planet.

While celebrity feminists such as Beyonce were recruited as part of lucrative public relations campaign to ban a word, the Iraqi parliament was preparing to pass a new law that would legalize rape, prohibit women leaving home without the permission of their husband, and legalize marriage for 9-year-old girls. There was no multi-million dollar feminist media blitz to bring light to this desperate situation, nor did Beyonce appear in any PSAs to put pressure on the government of Saudi Arabia over their characterization of female drivers as potential terrorists.

By misdirecting money and attention into causes that only serve to restrict free speech, establishment feminism sidelines real women’s rights issues.

5) Feminists Ignore the Plight of Muslim Women

Fearing being labeled racist, politically correct left-wing feminists will rarely if ever campaign against some of the most egregious human rights abuses committed against women in the Muslim world. This again underscores the fact that mainstream feminism is not what it purports to be.

While there are innumerable examples of women being persecuted in the Muslim world, from their characterization as terrorists simply for driving in Saudi Arabia, to genital mutilation in African countries, to stonings in places like Afghanistan, establishment feminists are too busy pursuing inane and offbeat causes such as Wikipedia being too “masculine” in order to focus on actual examples of oppression.

While western feminists continue to contrive pointless arguments about “sexism” in western culture that are almost half a century out of date, the feminist movement is virtually AWOL when it comes to voicing fierce criticism of Muslim societies whose treatment of women is at least 200 years behind acceptable modern standards.

“It is a curious fact that our courageous feminists leaders, women who attack mild-mannered American men at the slightest sign of sexism, often grow oddly silent when confronted with the more fundamental abuse of women in Muslim societies,” writes Charlotte Hays, noting how feminists attack people who speak out against FGM (female genital mutilation) by scorning them at “culturally insensitive”.

6) Advertising Targets Women

In the United States, women buy more than 80% of all goods and services. This is why the majority of advertising is aimed at women. Advertisers routinely hijack feminist sentiment to push products that are not even beneficial and in some cases harmful to women, such as paraben-laden cosmetic products. This can be traced right back to the very foundation of modern advertising when Edward Bernays, the “father of public relations,” was hired to sell cigarettes to women, who had previously been banned from smoking in public. By marketing Lucky Strike cigarettes as “torches of freedom” and connecting them with the suffrage movement, Bernays convinced millions of women to take up the habit, undoubtedly leading to chronic illnesses and deaths in many cases.

Today’s advertising targets women by making them feel inadequate about their appearance and lifestyle. Studies have shown that just looking at an object intended to enhance beauty makes women feel worse about themselves. Advertising teaches women that the only way to combat feelings of inadequacy is to endlessly consume beauty products and clothing. This in turn objectifies women as little more than pretty things to be looked at and dissuades them from spending their time and money on far more worthy activities like self-improvement, education and creative pursuits.

7) Mainstream Feminism is About Hating & Denigrating Masculinity

As dissident feminist Camille Paglia has expertly identified, mainstream feminism’s obsession with denying biological differences between men and women is to blame for many of modern society’s relationship troubles. “What you’re seeing is how a civilization commits suicide,” asserts Paglia, noting that the emancipation of masculine virtues is psychologically neutering boys and creating a toxic gender imbalance.

This is part of the reason why many women now complain that it is increasingly difficult to find “real men,” in other words emotionally stable men who are comfortable in their masculinity and are not afraid to express it. Feminism has frightened an entire generation of young men into being confused about how they should behave around women lest they be labeled a misogynist. This deliberate attempt to confuse gender roles undoubtedly contributes to many relationship breakdowns and soaring divorce rates.

8) Women are Being Brainwashed that Femininity and Motherhood are Dirty Words

Despite motherhood being one of the most difficult and crucial roles any woman could undertake – nurturing a child from birth and attempting to help it grow into a stable and happy individual – mainstream feminism habitually disparages women taking on traditional gender roles as somehow being a form of bondage to a patriarchal society. Women are also erroneously told that they can put having children on hold until their late 30′s or 40′s without there being a substantial risk of complications.

The feminist dogma of gender as a social construction and not as an innate biological science serves to confuse gender roles, straining relationships between men and women and eroding the very foundation of society.

As the Independent Women’s Forum asserts, “While environment and socialization do play a significant role in human life, a growing body of research in neuroscience, endocrinology, and psychology over the past 40 years suggests there is a biological basis for many sex differences in aptitudes and preferences. In general, males have better spatial reasoning skills; females better verbal skills. Males are greater risk takers; females are more nurturing.”

9) The Real War on Women: Plunging Fertility Rates

Just as sperm counts for men are plunging worldwide, female fertility rates are showing a similar decline. America’s total fertility rate is now below the replacement rate, at 1.93 for the average woman. This figure hasn’t been above the replacement rate of 2.1 children since the early 70′s.

While second wave feminism has framed women’s reproductive rights around the issue of abortion, concerns about plunging fertility rates have gone unaddressed. There are numerous health and environmental factors which are contributing to declining fertility, including genetically modified foods and vaccines.

10) Estrogen Mimickers Causing Cancer

Growing concern over how estrogen mimickers pose a huge health threat to women is also another issue that mainstream feminism has failed to address. Many of the transnational corporations that bankroll feminism would be directly impacted if estrogen mimickers, found in pharmaceuticals, pesticides, cosmetic products and industrial by-products, were banned, which is a primary reason why establishment feminism sidelines the problem.

Last year, researchers at Duke University linked environmental exposure to bisphenol A, a common plastic, with disruption of a gene necessary for proper functioning of nerve cells. Estrogen mimickers are causing cells to rapidly grow out of control, leading to the formation of cancerous tumors. Breast cancer amongst women is surging. “15 million years of ‘healthy life’ were lost worldwide in 2008 due to women dying early or being ill with the disease,” according to scientific studies.

Conclusion

The good news is that many women are losing faith in second wave feminism. Recent polls show that a minority of women – 38 per cent – consider themselves feminists, while 72 per cent of Americans as a whole do not consider themselves to be feminists.

An increasing understanding of the fact that establishment feminism is a political dogma exclusively designed to achieve social engineering while ignoring real women’s rights issues has led to many former feminists renouncing their involvement in feminism, which is increasingly becoming a fringe movement that has succeeded only in discrediting itself.

(WARNING: Graphic) Common Core Approved Child Pornography

Following are graphic and explicit excerpts from The Bluest Eye, which is on the Common Core’s list of exemplar texts for 11th graders. If you are easily offended you may want to skip them and go straight to the story.  (Note from editor:  Even heavily edited, this is still very graphic.)

Pages 162-163:  “A bolt of desire ran down his genitals…and softening the lips of his anus. . . . He wanted to f*** her—tenderly. But the tenderness would not hold. The tightness of her vagina was more than he could bear. His soul seemed to slip down his guts and fly out into her, and the gigantic thrust he made into her then provoked the only sound she made. Removing himself from her was so painful to him he cut it short and snatched his genitals out of the dry harbor of her vagina. She appeared to have fainted.”

 

 
Page 174:  “He further limited his interests to little girls. They were usually manageable . . . His sexuality was anything but lewd; his patronage of little girls smacked of innocence and was associated in his mind with cleanliness.” And later, this same pedophile notes, “I work only through the Lord. He sometimes uses me to help people.”

Page 181:  “The little girls are the only things I’ll miss. Do you know that when I touched their sturdy little t*** and bit them—just a little—I felt I was being friendly?—If I’d been hurting them, would they have come back? . . . they’d eat ice cream with their legs open while I played with them. It was like a party.”

Pages 84-85:  “He must enter her surreptitiously, lifting the hem of her nightgown only to her navel. He must rest his weight on his elbows when they make love, to avoid hurting her breasts…When she senses some spasm about to grip him, she will make rapid movements with her hips, press her fingernails into his back, suck in her breath, and pretend she is having an orgasm. She might wonder again, for the six hundredth time, what it would be like to have that feeling while her husband’s penis is inside her.”

Pages 130-131:  “Then he will lean his head down and bite my t** . . . I want him to put his hand between my legs, I want him to open them for me. . . I stretch my legs open, and he is on top of me…He would die rather than take his thing out of me. Of me. I take my fingers out of his and put my hands on his behind…”

Pages 148-149:  “With a violence born of total helplessness, he pulled her dress up, lowered his trousers and underwear. ‘I said get on wid it. An’make it good, n*****, Come on c***. Faster. You ain’t doing nothing for her.’ He almost wished he could do it—hard, long, and painfully, he hated her so much.” 

I understand that after reading those excerpts a lot of you may be angry that this is approved for reading in any school. I could probably end the article here.

However, there are many things that need to be addressed and I have detailed for you here with much help from Jill Manning, PhD.

Adams 12 5 Star School District is the 5th largest school district in Colorado and has transitioned to the new Common Core standards. The book, Toni Morrison’s 1970 novel, “The Bluest Eye,” is among Common Core’s exemplar texts for 11th graders.

I was recently afforded the opportunity to discuss the book with Dr. Jill Manning, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She has been involved in social policy and research and has testified for legislators on these issues. Dr. Manning is also a former Social Science Fellow at the Heritage Foundation. She knows what she’s talking about and she also happens to be a concerned mother.

Obviously the reason behind some parents calls for removing the book are the graphic depictions of incest, rape and pedophilia. And not just that, the book actually lets the reader see the depictions from the perpetrators point of view.

In fact, the author of the book, Morrison, says that she wanted the reader to feel as though they are a “co-conspirator” with the rapist. She took pains to make sure she never portrayed the actions as wrong in order to show how everyone has their own problems. She even goes as far as to describe the pedophilia, rape and incest “friendly,” “innocent,” and “tender.” It’s no wonder that this book is in the top 10 list of most contested books in the country.

The Bluest Eye is the story of Pecola Breedlove, a young black girl, who prays every day for beauty: for the blond hair and blue eyes that she believes will allow her to fit in. As her life begins to disintegrate in the face of adversity and strife, such as being raped by her father and beaten by her mother, she finally appeals to Soaphead Church, a pedophile, to help her attain blue eyes. After being impregnated by her father, she loses her baby and ultimately loses her mind.

Dr. Manning is one of 5 people to introduce research-based arguments to remove this book from approved literature in the classroom. Among the five people were two concerned parents who had children that were negatively impacted by the book, an English teacher, a lawyer, and Dr. Manning.

The parents who are actively petitioning the school board to have it removed from the classroom do not want a complete ban on the book nor its removal from the school; rather they would like it to be removed from the approved reading list in the classroom, where students spend three to four weeks reading and discussing, in depth, the developmentally inappropriate material.

There are people out there advocating to let this book remain in the classroom because 11th and 12th graders have the ability to read this material especially those in Advanced Placement classes. As Dr. Manning points out, there is a huge difference between being labeled a mature reader, as in one that is technically capable of reading challenging novels, and biopsychosocial maturation. One of the top reasons behind choosing this book is the fact that it is on the Common Core Standards list of exemplar texts. It aligns with the standards and meets the course objectives and needs of students.

Children are simply not mature enough to process the violent, incestuous sex scenes in the book. And yes, high school kids are still considered children! They are minors. They are not adults, and they are not in college. We need to use some common sense when choosing texts to be studied in the classroom. Children’s developing brains do not need to be assaulted with this notion of sexual violence. Educators are supposed to protect children from violence.

The American Academy of Pediatrics studies and develops policies pertaining to youth from birth through age 21, and specifically lists books as part of the mass media environment examined by their institution.  The AAP states that exposure to violence in media has a significant risk on the health of children and adolescents and can contribute to aggressive behavior, desensitization to violence, nightmares and fear of being harmed. It is also associated with teen pregnancy and promiscuity. The AAP has also called on schools specifically to do more in the way of preventing young people from being exposed to and negatively impacted by harmful media.

Although this group of concerned citizens in Colorado, including Manning, have repeatedly asked to see any research that would back up the notion that this book and this kind of content is appropriate for children, they have yet to receive any evidence along these lines. Why?

Because there is no evidence that would suggest this book or this kind of content is proven to beneficial or not harmful to children. On the contrary, there are numerous studies from a wide range of fields showing a wide range of harmful effects and risks.

Through some bizarre loopholes in educational policy, this book and others like it are allowed in the classroom. It is able to slip past the checks and balances that we have in place to protect children from violence because even though it does not meet the common standard of decency, it is not a form of entertainment. It’s all in the name of English. No matter the level of filth in the book, it’s English! Therefore it must be allowed.

The Superintendent’s Policy actually has a section that should clearly cause for halt of having this book in the classroom: (“SP”) 6220, Section 2.2.2 requires that “[s]ensitivity to practices and beliefs of other cultures shall be manifested in instructional methods and academic content” (emphasis added).  SP  6230, Section 4.0 adds that “[i]nstructional materials shall be selected which: . . . 4.2 enrich and support the curriculum taking into consideration the varied needs, interests, abilities, and maturity levels of pupils served.

Using just the smallest amount of common sense we can deduce that if the book cannot be read aloud in the class, could not be viewable if it was a movie and couldn’t be played on the stereo if it was a CD, then why is it okay for it to be read and discussed; in school of all places! In fact, according to one lawyer, if the incidents in this book were a movie or a picture there would be a very clear cut case for prosecution for child pornography.

I would imagine that a great deal of parents, especially anyone with any semblance of morality in their bodies would be opposed to this book being proffered by a teacher to his or her classroom. A teacher is a trusted adult and surely if they recommend a book for a student to read, that book then has more weight and is seen as “acceptable” with perhaps even “acceptable behavior” in it.

In fact, the teachers mark the pages that can only be read at home. The sexually explicit scenes that take place are noted by page numbers and the kids have to read those portions of the book at home. It’s truly astounding. If there are parts of the book that are so explicit that they can’t be read in school, you’d think that would be a giant red flag to keep that book out of the hands of children.

I’m all for freedom of speech but I draw the line when it comes to children and minors. Our schools are supposed to be working in tandem with parents to enrich children’s lives and teach them valuable lessons, not including introducing them to graphic, sexual violence with no mental health resources or context provided. Of course, if a book is chosen that would require mental health resources, again, you have a flashing red sign that reads: Not for children!

Not only that but it’s irresponsible to introduce this literature to kids who you have no idea of knowing their past experiences with rape, incest, or violence. Imagine the scenario where you send a child who has been abused or raped home to read the illicit portion of the book and he or she has to not only read it, and be confused by the portrayal of the perpetrator as a normal human being, but the child also happens to be living with their very own perpetrator who happens to be a family member.

People and educators who are in favor of this kind of book are misinformed. They are perhaps not aware of or understand the social science and medical research that suggest it is not an appropriate choice for the classroom. Many who have read the book still praise it due to its “the multi-layered structure” and comparisons to blues music. Dr. Manning believes that, in part, their praise highlights more of a desensitization to sexually explicit material and/or ignorance to the well-documented effects of this kind of material.   And then you have people who just haven’t read the book themselves so they don’t know the graphic nature. They look to the lists of books that are deemed appropriate and trust the people who determined the book makes the list. The only caveat is sexual content is not on that checklist of things that would make a book inappropriate for school.

Recently a student, a minor, at one of the CO high schools has started her own petition to keep the novel in their classrooms. This reminds me of a small child advocating for more candy before dinner. Does a child know better than an adult? In most cases, no. In this case, especially.

In fact, in a Harris poll it shows that a 62% of Americans say that books with explicit language should not be available to children in school libraries. The same poll shows that a majority of Americans think no books should be banned completely (56%). This shows you that American’s are against book banning but wants limits by seeking the community standard of decency for books in schools.

Advocates also say that this book is necessary for college preparation. It’s beneficial to a student who can read these kinds of novels to prepare them for academic success. How is reading a filthy book filled with pornographic scenes beneficial and preparing a student for success in college? Oh, but it’s not a filthy pornographic book, it’s not entertainment, it’s for educational purposes! We just want to introduce the kids to different ways of life!

In case you’re just thinking, “Opt out!” I have to tell you, opting your child out of reading this book doesn’t protect him or her. They are still surrounded by the other students who are going to be saturated with this book.

Students that are opted out were being sent to the library for self-guided study for three weeks.  This actually violates the equal educational opportunity policy.  According to Dr. Manning, the superintendent has now ruled that if this book is being taught, two classes must be offered that don’t use the book; however, again, this does not deal with the issue of harm.  This ‘solution’ only deals with the fact that some people may not like the book.  Opt out works when you have similar levels and appropriateness to the material being offered and when none of it goes into the realm of harmful material.

And let’s use the ever-elusive common sense here. If you have a movie that was rated R, a child under 17 couldn’t see it without parental guidance. It certainly couldn’t be shown in the classroom, so why in the world would it be okay to let the child read a book that contains the same sort of things that require parental authority?

This child pornography is protected and lauded because it resides between the pages of a novel. It’s located in libraries and written by an author who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in the 1990s. Don’t forget Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace prize for…well, that’s still a head scratcher, so I don’t put too much stock into Nobel prizes.

This is not different than if I take some manure and spread it on a canvas and then place it in a gilded frame and hang it in an art gallery. I call it art, therefore, it is art. I encourage people to get up close with the “art” and even encourage touching it so they can really process it.

Now the same thing is true for the novel and for my manure art. It’s subjective, it’s potentially very harmful to people and in the end, it doesn’t matter the label you slap on it it’s still just a pile of manure.
